Homework Assignments, Class Participation & Projects

Class Assignments and Projects:

100 points for the semester will come from online Aplia homework assignments, lecture class participation, and an investment project to be typed up and submitted to your TA for grading.

Aplia Assignments (70 points):

You are required to complete the online Graded Aplia assignments (also known as Assignment II for that chapter’s title) for all of the chapters that we cover this semester plus the Graded Learning Finance review assignments, see the schedule of assignments below.  If you bought the textbook/Aplia bundle at the bookstore, you will find a payment code in the access card is supplied with your textbook.  If you wish you can purchase an electronic version of the textbook along with Aplia at http://aplia.com instead of the hardcopy textbook bundle at the bookstores.  Aplia cannot be purchased separately. Click here for step-by-step Aplia registration instructions.    In addition to the graded assignments that are due according to the below schedule, I encourage you to complete the practice assignment given for each chapter.  The practice assignment will give you immediate feedback for each question.  For the Graded assignments, you can change your answers as often as you like up to the due date deadline, but feedback won’t be given until after the deadline.  No credit will be given for late assignments and you will be allowed to drop 4 assignments.  Your overall correct percentage (from you best 13 out of 17 assignments) will be multiplied by 70 points at the end of the semester.

You will also find these due dates in the Course Schedule page of this website and on your Aplia course outline.  All assignments are due by 11 PM on the below dates except where indicated.

Investment Project (15 points):

This project will be posted on this Assignments Page of the course website.  The project must be typed and handed in to your TA to be graded.

The project is due on the date indicated on the Course Schedule and below.  This project will require or will be much easier to complete via the use of spreadsheet software (either Lotus or Excel).  Each assignment will be graded, and the grade will be a partial determinant of your course grade. All projects are to be turned into your TA’s mailbox in 340 Wohlers by 4 PM on the following date.

*      Investment Project      (15 pts)             Apr. 13

Late projects received before the graded assignments are returned will lose a minimum of one half of the point value of the assignment.  No assignment will be accepted after the graded assignments are returned.  The graded assignments will be return in the following week’s discussion section.

These projects will give you practice with the types of calculations and concepts that are important to a proper understanding of the material of the course.  Also, these projects tie together concepts and material from different units of the course.

If you prefer to work with one or more other students in completing these assignments, you may do so.  Groups are limited to a maximum size of four students who are all in one of the discussion sections taught by the same Teaching Assistant.  If you work in a group, the group will turn in one solution to the assignment and everyone in the group will receive the same grade on the assignment.  If more than one group works together and turns in, substantially, the same work, this violates the rules of the course and the rules on academic integrity, and penalties will be assessed.  Working with and collaborating with other groups is not allowed.  The penalty for the first infraction of these rules will be a zero on the assignment and these students will not be allowed to take the optional final exam.  The penalty for a second infraction will result in a failing grade for the course.

Project solutions must be typed with your name(s) (or names of all your group members) and your discussion section meeting time(s) & TA’s name typed at the top of the first page of your solutions.  Do not use cover sheets for your assignment solutions.  With the exception of the last assignment, you have a maximum of two weeks after an assignment is returned to address any grading questions or disputes with your TA.  After this point, no grading disputes or adjustments will be addressed for that particular assignment.  For the last assignment, you have one week after the last discussion section to address any grading questions or disputes with your TA.

Class Participation (15 points maximum)

I will ask multiple-choice questions during lecture which will be answered using your I-clicker that you need to purchase at the bookstore if you don’t already have an Iclicker device.  I will ask at least 15 of these questions during the semester and probably more.  In conjunction with these class participation exercises, we will be running a survivor contest in each lecture section.  The last student to miss a question in each lecture section will win a fabulous prize!  Ok, it will be a Best Buy or Circuit City gift certificate of $150.  You need to register your I-clicker device at the following website http://www.iclicker.com/registration/   Please enter your UIUC NetworkID in the student ID box, then enter the number on the back of your I-clicker and then follow the remaining instructions given at this website.  Wait to register your Iclicker until AFTER you answer some questions in lecture.
