The Department of Economics has been ranked 23rd in the U.S. News & World Report survey of graduate schools published in the March 1996 issue. In an article in Economic Inquiry, Illinois ranked 19th, based on number of pages published by economics faculty between 1984-93. The department moves to 17th when pages in the top 36 journals are counted for the same period.

Richard J. Arnould, professor of economics, was appointed head of the department after a two year national search, effective August 21, 1996. A specialist in health economics, industrial organization, and government regulation, Arnould holds a Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. in economics from Iowa State University. Since joining the department in 1967, Arnould has held several administrative positions in the college: director of the Office of Research, director of the Program in Health Economics, Management, and Policy, and associate dean of the College of Commerce (1979-87). He is co-editor of the quarterly Review of Economics and Finance. His recent publications have concentrated in health-care economics and policy. |

The Program in Health Education Management and Policy (PHEMP) participated in a series of campus-wide seminars devoted to medicaid reforms being considered or implemented by various states. Speakers from across the nation participated. Richard J. Arnould, professor of economics and head of department is director of PHEMP.
